MARKHAM, ON, May 12, 2008 ~ “Markham offers its deepest condolences to the citizens of China who have been affected by this terrible tragedy. Earthquakes of this nature have a devastating impact, and Markham will provide the support we can to help these communities,” said Mayor Frank Scarpitti.
“I just returned from China with Regional Councillor Tony C. Wong, as part of a Markham business delegation, and was in some of the areas affected. We will contact some of our new friends there and officials from our sister city Wuhan, in the next few days to see if there is specific support we can offer. Markham Council will discuss this at its meeting tomorrow evening, May 13, and in a meeting later today we will discuss the measures that can be taken immediately to provide assistance.”
“A large number of Markham’s residents have friends, relatives or colleagues in China and we will do our utmost to help where possible with fundraising or communications with China.” |
