York Regional Police is reminding citizens to ensure their vehicles are secured
Sun Jun 15, 2008

York Regional Police is reminding citizens to ensure their vehicles are secured and all valuables are out of sight after an increase in smash-and-grab thefts of Global Positioning Systems (GPSs) from parked vehicles in the City of Vaughan.

The #4 District Criminal Investigation Bureau has received reports of more than 80 GPS thefts from unattended vehicles since the beginning of 2008.

These items retail for more than $400 and most attach to the dashboard or windshield by suction cup. Drivers park their vehicles, leave the GPSs in plain view and when they return, find the window smashed and the item stolen.

Police are reminding the public to ensure all valuables such as GPSs, portable DVD players, laptops and other expensive electronics are removed from their vehicles and properly secured out of sight. Thieves are opportunists and to some degree, everyone is responsible for their own personal property. Properly securing your home and your car and doing what you can to protect yourself while out in the community are preventative measures that each one of us can take.

Investigators from the #4 District Criminal Investigation Bureau are also urging residents to contact police to report all thefts no matter how small. Information provided may identify suspects and possibly result in the return of stolen property to the rightful owners.

Following these crime prevention tips can reduce your risk of becoming a victim of crime:

- Always be aware of your surroundings.
- Be mindful of persons loitering or acting suspiciously.
- Report any suspicious activity to the police.
- We will respond to these calls
- Criminals are opportunists.
- Don’t make it easy for them
- Always place valuables in the trunk, out of sight or don’t leave items in the car at all
- Never leave a purse or wallet in your car.

Anyone with information, questions or concerns is asked to contact York Regional Police # 4 District -Criminal Investigation Bureau at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7441, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, or leave an anonymous tip online at www.1800222tips.com.
