Markham Council Passes Tree Preservation Bylaw

MARKHAM, ON – June 25, 2008 – Markham Council has taken another step to protect the environment and promote a greener community. A new tree preservation bylaw was passed by Markham Council on Tuesday, June 24. The bylaw applies to all properties within Markham and provides strict controls to preserve mature trees. Effective immediately, the bylaw requires property owners to obtain a permit before trees can be cut.

“Earlier this year we announced Markham Trees For Tomorrow, an initiative that will see us plant over 75,000 trees in the next three years,” said Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “It’s equally important for us to preserve Markham’s mature trees. This new bylaw and Trees For Tomorrow work hand in hand to achieve that goal.”

Under the bylaw, property owners must obtain a permit from Markham to cut any trees with a diameter of 20 centimetres (about eight inches) or more at 1.37 metres (about 54 inches) from ground level. Cutting trees less than 20 centimetres in diameter and minor tree pruning does not require a permit. Fines associated with violating the new bylaw can be as high as $100,000.

Markham Councillor Erin Shapero, Chair of Markham’s Environment and Sustainability Committee, said, “This bylaw is consistent with Council’s direction and leadership on important environmental issues. Trees play a critical role in maintaining a healthy environment and a beautiful community.”

An extensive public awareness program will begin immediately. Local advertising, print promotions, information on Markham’s website, community information boards, posters and direct mail to local suppliers and contractors will be used to explain features of the new bylaw.
