Markham Welcomes Nordlingen Delegation
Thu Aug 28, 2008

Nordlingen, Germany - Home of Markham’s founding settlers in 1794

MARKHAM, ON – Markham is welcoming an important delegation of dignitaries from Nordlingen, Germany from August 28 – September 5. Led by Nordlingen Lord Mayor Hermann Faul and Council members, the 120 person group is the largest official Nordlingen delegation to visit Markham. Nordlingen and Markham have strong historic ties.

In 1794, William ‘Moll’ Berczy led a group of 64 families from the Nordlingen area in Germany to become the first settlers in Markham. In 2001 the two communities established a cultural alliance through a partnership agreement. The agreement set the stage for a number of social and cultural exchanges and activities to promote peace and harmony throughout the world. Cultural groups and dignitaries from Nordlingen and Markham have exchanged visits and performed at festivals since the agreement was in place.

The delegation visiting Markham this year includes Nordlingen’s band Knabenkapelle Nördlingen. The more than 60-member band – ranging in age from 8 to 20 – will perform at the Unionville Main Street Band Festival, Markham Museum, and the Canadian National Exhibition.

“On this official visit to Markham, we’re delighted that we have the chance to play host to Lord Mayor Hermann Faul, Nordlingen Council and band members. I am very pleased that we have this opportunity to return the hospitality Nordlingen has extended to Markham over the years,” said Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “While they are here our Nordlingen guests will see and experience many parts of Markham, and explore the Greater Toronto Area and Niagara Falls.”
Everyone is invited to meet our guests and hear the Nordlingen band.
