York Regional Police is reminding all members of the public during this fall’s federal election campaign and during all election campaigns that removing, altering or damaging election signs on public or private property are criminal offences.
Throughout the course of this federal election campaign, York Regional Police has received reports of damage to signs or theft of signs by unknown persons. Often the mess is left to be cleaned up afterwards by the homeowner or municipal workers.
York Regional Police is urging both candidates and voters to respect the property of others. Removing, altering or damaging election signs could result in a criminal charge of mischief or theft being laid.
Anyone who sees this type of activity is urged to contact police immediately.
Owners of commercial premises are reminded about the importance of using and maintaining video surveillance in their businesses. The use of this type of equipment can be invaluable to investigators after a crime has occurred.
