HONEYWELL OPENS LEED OFFICE COMPLEX
Technologies in New Complex Save Water, Minimize Light Pollution, and Recover Wasted Heat to Provide Comfort
MARKHAM, Ontario, Sept. 25, 2008 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today held a grand opening for a new, green office complex in the Town of Markham, which is part of North America’s largest mixed-use, sustainable development.
Honeywell, a global leader in energy services and green building solutions, consolidated two of its offices, moving approximately 400 employees into the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design® (LEED)-registered complex. The office will serve as the new Canadian headquarters for the Honeywell Building Solutions business.
“We are implementing the same innovations we provide to clients, and are establishing a greener workspace in the process,” said Charlene Arje, president and national executive of Honeywell Canada. “This facility demonstrates our commitment to reducing the environmental footprint of our facilities through more efficient building performance. The overall result is lower energy costs, reduced emissions, and a more comfortable and productive environment.”
The 68,000-square-foot workspace incorporates several Honeywell solutions to help the Markham facility reach the targeted LEED Silver certification. This includes the Honeywell Enterprise Buildings Integrator (EBI), a facility management platform that actively monitors and manages air quality and climate control throughout the facility, optimizing comfort while reducing energy consumption. Honeywell systems for fire alarm, access control, intrusion protection and digital video monitoring are also integrated into the building design, and managed through EBI.
Some of the many green features of the building include: • State-of-the-art Honeywell building automation systems designed to maximize the performance of building mechanical systems Carbon dioxide sensors to match ventilation with occupancy requirements Technologies that recover waste heat from exhaust systems to heat building • Water-saving measures High-efficiency devices reduce water use by 54 percent reduction A cistern captures rainwater from the roof to reduce the amount of treated water needed to remove waste, saving almost 2.5 million litres of water per year • Site lighting to minimize “light pollution” of the night sky; special fixtures ensure that no light spills upwards • Low-volatile organic compound (VOC) paints, coatings, sealants and adhesives help create a healthy work environment and reduce smog
Participating in today’s celebration were hundreds of Honeywell employees, clients and partners, as well as government dignitaries including Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti; The Honourable John McCallum, MP, Markham-Unionville and Mr. Monte Kwinter, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of International Trade and Investment, who demonstrated their support for Honeywell’s leadership.
“It is encouraging to see global corporations take the initiative to support a sustainable economy, and improve the areas where their employees work and live,” said Ontario Environment Minister John Gerretsen. “I commend Honeywell for doing their part in creating a greener Ontario.” The certification of LEED-registered commercial space, overseen by the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC), allows companies to operate as a sustainable member of their communities by demonstrating a commitment to environmental practices. It is the most recognized green building rating system in North America. Many developers, particularly those working on federal government and leading-edge private sector buildings, are requiring that building designs meet one of the various LEED certification levels. Honeywell has more than 100 LEED-accredited professionals on staff, and is actively involved in the CaGBC and U.S. Green Building Council. The company also works with organizations to conserve energy, optimize building operations and leverage renewable energy.
Since the 1980s, Honeywell completed more than 5,000 energy-efficiency projects in facilities across the globe. It also helped 5 million homeowners decrease their energy use through its work with utilities. These projects are expected to deliver more than $5 billion in energy and operational savings. The company also joined the Clinton Climate Initiative in an effort to help the world’s largest cities, including Toronto, improve energy efficiency in their facilities and decrease greenhouse gas emissions.
