Markham Mayor and Unionville High School Students Celebrate Earth Day April 22 Tree Planting at Markham Civic Centre Marks Earth Day and 2009 Trees for Tomorrow Program
MARKHAM, ON – Earth Day, April 22, 2009 - Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti, students from the Unionville High School EcoAction Club, Markham Council members and Town staff were earth friendly this morning. As part of Earth Day celebrations and to mark the Town’s 2009 Trees for Tomorrow program, a tree was planted on the Markham Civic Centre grounds to mark the beginning of Earth Day . Through Trees for Tomorrow, Markham has committed to planting 75,000 trees by 2010. With 50,000 trees already planted, we are more than halfway to our goal – but we still need our residents’ help. “Get involved and plant trees at a community planting, with your family, through your business, or with your sports or community organization,” said Mayor Scarpitti.

Upcoming Trees for Tomorrow community plantings are planned for: April 25 Pomona Mills conservationists – 15 Church Lane, Thornhill, 10 a.m. to 12 noon
April 26 10,000 Trees for the Rouge planting, northeast corner 9th Line and Donald Cousens Parkway, Markham, 9 a.m.
May 2 Trees for Tomorrow Community Planting, southwest corner of Highway 7 and Rodick Road – 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Protection of our environment is one of Markham’s six priorities under the Town’s strategic direction of Building Markham’s Future Together.
