$60,000 Ontario Trillium Foundation Grant Helps With
Markham Centennial Bocce Club Grand Opening

On November 22, over 200 guests gathered at the Markham Centennial Bocce Club to celebrate its official opening. Markham MPP Michael Chan was joined by Mervat Rashwan from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to congratulate the Markham Centennial Bocce Club on the work they’ve achieved after receiving a $60,100 grant from the Foundation in 2008. Joining the Honourable Michael Chan and Mervat Rashwan at the festivities were Mayor Frank Scarpitti, MP John McCallum, MP Paul Calandra and many members of the club.

“This new facility is a great addition to Markham and will benefit people of all ages and abilities,” said Michael Chan, MPP for Markham-Unionville. “It is a testament to the hard work of a group of individuals who share our government’s commitment to invest in and build healthy, sustainable and caring communities in Ontario.”

The Markham Centennial Bocce Club was created in 2006 to bring the game of bocce to players of all ages with varying degrees of ability; and to introduce, promote and use the game of bocce as a means of creating better social interaction within the community. This facility will allow the use of bocce to be played year round and will continue to get many more people involved in the therapeutic sport of bocce as it grows in popularity.

The grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation was used to help purchase equipment to make the bocce courts accessible to all user groups and to equip the kitchen and social area.

“To the Ontario Trillium Foundation, I want to extend the enormous gratitude of the Markham Centennial Bocce Club and our generous sponsors and supporter for this wonderful opportunity to encourage the sport of bocce within our community,” said Carmen Di Paola, President of the Markham Centennial Bocce Club.
