An area to completely avoid is the Maskinonge River located at the bridge in the centre of Keswick, south of Riveredge Drive in the Town of Georgina. Construction barriers have been placed on the thin ice to alert everyone to stay off the ice and completely away from the area while work is being done by the Township.

as a result of the colder weather and the recent snowfall, ice has begun to form on portions of Lake Simcoe. However, York Regional Police is prompted to warn the public that lakes and streams are not frozen and although waterways are snow-covered, they are NOT SAFE.

Those who take part in activities such as snowmobiling and ice-fishing are reminded that conditions are too dangerous to be out on the ice. You are risking your life by even walking on newly-formed portions of ice.

Citizens are reminded that the vessels that comprise the York Regional Police Marine Unit have now been removed from the waters of Lake Simcoe for the season. Marine and cold-water rescue officers are always available for emergencies and have vessels on standby, but the public is reminded to take all precautions necessary if they decide to venture out on the water.

York Regional Police reminds the public that any activities near bodies of water this time of year are risky actions occurring in an uncontrolled and unpredictable natural setting. If you make smart, educated choices on safety, accidents can be prevented. If you are participating in recreational activities near lakes and streams, follow these safety precautions:

· Stay off the ice

· Wear the appropriate clothing and ensure you wear a certified flotation device

· Tell someone about your plans and specifically where you are going

· Carry a cellular phone with you at all times

· Be cautious of your footing around banks of rivers and streams

· Always treat ice as unsafe
