The Regional Municipality of York Presents The Planet in Focus Cross Canada Tour
Thu Feb 21, 2008 - Tue May 27, 2008

York Region’s Administrative Centre is venue for Film Festival screenings

The Regional Municipality of York is pleased to continue our partnership with Canada’s premiere environmental film festival, the Planet in Focus International Environmental Film & Video Festival, as part of its Cross Canada Tour.

WHERE: The Regional Municipality of York Administrative Centre

17250 Yonge Street, Town of Newmarket

               Seminar Room

TIME:  7 p.m.

WHEN: Thursday, February 21 - Radiophobia: Twenty years later, town residents and workers of the Chernobyl power plant in Prypiat, Ukraine, return to the scene of the world’s worst civilian nuclear disaster. (English subtitles)

Wednesday, March 19 - Thanks for all the Fish: The Aborigine people of Stradbroke Island, Australia would call to their local dolphins by striking the surface of the water in a coded rhythm.  The dolphins would drive shoals of fish against the shore and a portion of the catch was always given back to the dolphins to show thanks and respect. Are there things that we can learn from a system that emphasizes balance?

Thursday, April 24 - Alone Across Australia: Jon Muir, one of the world’s most accomplished climbers and adventurers, attempts to cross the continent of Australia from the south coast to the north (2,500 km) with his dog as his only company and carrying nothing but the barest essentials. (Contains graphic images)

Tuesday,  May 27 - Travels by Tricycle: For more than a year, 74-year old Wang Yimin cycles across China on a custom built tricycle trailer with his 98-year-old mother sitting in the back.  It’s a cross-country tour, motored by a son’s devotion. (English subtitles)

The Regional Municipality of York Administrative Centre is easily accessible by public transit including VIVA and YRT.  Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students. Those arriving by transit will receive a $2 discount by showing a valid transfer. All proceeds will be forwarded to the not-for-profit Planet in Focus International Environmental Film and Video Festival (www.planetinfocus.org)
