MARKHAM ~ “72 Hours: Is Your Family Prepared?” Markham is asking residents to take the necessary steps to be prepared for an emergency or disaster, as we mark Emergency Preparedness (EP) Week – May 4 to 10.
Everyone needs to know the potential hazards and risks they face and to take the responsibility to plan ahead and be prepared so they can survive an emergency or disaster.
The first 72 hours of an emergency are when rescue personnel may be fully occupied with people most directly impacted by a crisis. They may not be able to reach you or your home any sooner, should you need help.
“When an emergency occurs, the time for planning is over. Being prepared is an important step towards minimizing the impact of an emergency. Knowing the risks and developing practical plans can reduce fear and aid in recovery,” said Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “Emergency Preparedness Week is a time for our residents, our business owners, municipal officials and utility operators to check their emergency readiness.”
Find out what should go into your family emergency preparedness kit and learn how to protect yourself and your family at the Town of Markham Emergency Management Program display at the Angus Glen Community Centre and Library, May 5 to 7, or at Milliken Mills Community Centre on May 8 and 9. Representatives of the Canadian Red Cross will also be on hand at the program displays. For more details on preparedness, be sure to get a copy of the Emergency Preparedness Guide – a publication jointly developed by York Region and its municipalities. The Guide is also available on www.markham.ca “All levels of government have an important role to play in emergency preparedness and response,” Mayor Scarpitti said. “However, emergency preparedness starts with the individual. This Week is designed to encourage people to plan ahead so they can take appropriate actions during and after a disaster.”
Emergency preparedness is everyone’s responsibility. Prepare your emergency survival kit today for a safer tomorrow. |
