A CHRISTMAS SPECIAL - WITH THE TORONTO ALL-STAR BIG BAND
One of the most exciting bands around, the 17-piece Toronto All-Star Big Band, joined by the voices of The TABB Five, “cooks” with its powerful tributes to the heady hits of the 1930’s and 40’s. Brilliant programming, slick choreography and witty cultural nostalgia characterize this award-winning ensemble’s productions as it performs to sell-out audiences across Ontario, into the northern U.S., and throughout Florida state.
But what really draws the crowds for the Toronto All-Star Big Band is the remarkable talent and youthful exuberance of the musicians – all aged 15 to 22 years, and all cream-of-the-crop young artists from around the GTA and as far-reaching as Bolton and Aurora. What the audience hears and sees is reminiscent of the original bands of the Swing Era – the likes of young Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey and the Andrews Sisters. From towns to cities, the band has played to consistently glowing reviews: “What energy! What passion! A CHRISTMAS SPECIAL hearkens back to the traditional “Christmas Show” of yesteryear, turning back time to the heart of the swing era when Big Bands and vocalists first dared to jazzify the classics. The result is a light-hearted, romantic, jazzy program laced with traditional carols, nostalgic storytelling and humour for the season. Louis Armstrong’s Cool Yule, Harry Connick Jr.’s I’ll be Home for Christmas, Glenn Miller’s Jingle Bells, and Les Brown’s swinging Nutcracker Suite are among the program highlights, staged in a retro parlour complete with Christmas trees and cozy fireplace.
The Toronto All-Star Big Band is now well known and loved in the Markham region. In recent years, the band has delivered return engagements for Markham’s Swan Lake community, a grand cathedral fundraiser for the York Centre, a Christmas show at the Newmarket Theatre and a show-stopping appearance at the Markham Jazz Festival - “created a sensation among fans” “a most exciting performance” – Artistic Director, Markham Jazz Festival.
December 11th marks the 3rd performance of the Toronto All-Star Big Band’s A CHRISTMAS SPECIAL show, setting out on tour to theatres in Owen Sound, Hamilton, Picton and Toronto.
