York Regional Police, in partnership with the Ministry of Transportation and York Region Health Services, will be holding a child car seat clinic on Friday, April 24, 2009, from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m., at Canada’s Wonderland located at 9580 Jane Street in the City of Vaughan.
The goal of this morning clinic is to inspect car seats for proper installation. Only installed car seats will be inspected and participants must ensure the seat is installed to the best of their ability prior to arriving at the clinic.
The fundamentals of car seats:
- Always follow the instructions according to the child seat manufacturer’s manual and the vehicle owner’s manual
- Make sure the restraint system has CMVSS (Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard) on the label and comes with up-to-date and complete manufacturer’s instructions
- Check the weight and height limits of the seat to be sure that it is correct for your child
- Before you buy a seat, try it in your vehicle to be sure that it can be installed properly and can be tightened so there is little movement
- Transport Canada recommends that children 12 and under should be properly restrained in the back seat, especially if there is a front passenger seat air bag
- Infants under 9 kg (20 lb) must be secured in a rear-facing seat
- Toddlers 9 kg to less than 18 kg ( 20 to 40 lb.) must be secured in a forward-facing seat
- Pre-schoolers 18 to 36 kg.(40-40 lbs), less than 145 cm (4’9”) tall and children under the age of 8 years must be secured in a booster seat.
This is a great opportunity for residents of York Region to come out and learn how to keep their family safe. Car seat inspectors will be happy to answer questions and provide safety tips.
This child car seat clinic will take place, weather-permitting, in the parking lot of Canada’s Wonderland located at 9580 Jane Street in the City of Vaughan. Inspections are on a first-come, first-serve basis. The available time will only allow for the first 50 vehicles to be inspected.
