Town of Markham – May Community Calendar The following is the May update on Town of Markham events, activities and special dates as a public service for residents.
May 2 – Trees For Tomorrow Community Planting – 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Southwest corner of Highway 7 and Rodick Road. Mayor Frank Scarpitti and Members of Markham Council invite all residents to come and help create a greener community. When you plant a tree, Markham breathes a little easier. This is a rain or shine event. Dress for the weather and bring gardening gloves, waterproof boots, shovels and buckets. Help us achieve our goal of planting 75,000 by 2010.
Ongoing to May 3 –Exhibition at the Varley Art Gallery. Legally Deafblind is a photographybased multimedia exhibition about individuals who are deafblind. Come and explore this interactive multimedia exhibition by artist, Natalie Schonfeld Howard. Visit www.varleygallery.ca May 3 – 12 noon to 3 p.m. Markham Youth Week Kickoff – Markville Shopping Centre – Highway 7 and McCowan Road. Come and celebrate Youth Week with Mayor Frank Scarpitti and Members of Council, the Mayor’s Youth Task Force and students. Events are planned throughout the week and month. May 3 – 9 Emergency Preparedness Week. Theme – “72 Hours: Is Your Family Prepared?” Markham is asking residents to take the necessary steps to be prepared for an emergency or disaster. Make a plan and create an emergency kit. For more information visit: getprepared.ca May 3 – 9 Be Kind to Animal Week – Theme Responsible Pet Ownership. For more information on Markham’s Animal Care Committee visit www.markham.ca and visit www.yorkregion.ontariospca.ca to find out how you can adopt a pet in need.
May 5 – Public Information Open House – Creating a Trees for Tomorrow Streetscape Manual 4 to 8 p.m. Markham Civic Centre – Learn about and provide input into Markham’s proposed Streetscape Manual. As part of Trees for Tomorrow, Markham is creating a manual of best practices for planning and maintaining successful trees to be used by developers, staff and residents.
May 6 – Mock Emergency Preparedness Exercise – Milliken Mills Community Centre – 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Residents invited to help our emergency services staff be prepared. Markham and York Region staff emergency staff and staff from Salvation Army, Red Cross, Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES), the OSPCA and St. John Ambulance are part of this practice exercise.
May 6 - Worm Away Your Garbage Workshop – 7 p.m. Milliken Mills Library, 7600 Kennedy Rd. Celebrate International Compost Awareness Week by learning how to “worm away your garbage” in this hands-on workshop with Cathy Nesbitt, Worm Advocate and founder of Cathy's Crawly Composters.
