The following is the June update on Town of Markham events, activities and special dates as a public service for residents.
June is Seniors’ Month. Celebrations are planned throughout the community to mark the contributions seniors make to Markham life.

June is Try It Month at all Markham Community Centres – This is a chance for Markham residents to check out FREE recreation and sport programs during June. Get on course to a healthier Markham. June 4 - Public Meeting on Integrated Leisure Master Plan – Thornhill Community Centre, 7755 Bayview Ave, Thornhill, 1 p.m. Hear about the development of the maser plan and how Markham will deliver our parks, recreation, culture and library services over the next 10 years.

Ongoing during June - Carnival: The Spirit and The Soul – Varley Art Gallery brings the Carnival to town with a multi-media exhibition that uses theatrical narrative and the mask as an element of story telling, common to virtually every world culture. Guest curated by Teodoro Dragonieri and Christopher Jackson. Runs until October 11. www.varleygallery.ca

June 5 – 7 Unionville Festival – 40th Anniversary – Fun for the Whole Family – Celebrate on Main Street, Unionville (just north of Highway 7). Three days of fun for the whole community. For more information visit unionvillefestival.com

June 7 – Carnival of the Arts at the Varley Art Gallery during the Unionville Festival – 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A celebration of art, song, poetry and the theatre, in partnership with Blue Bridge Festival. Workshops by Teordoro Dragonieri in mask-making, pantomime performance and a Parade of Masks through Main Street in Unionville.

June 7 – Varley Art Gallery – 2 p.m. Special Ceremony with Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti and Ontario Minister of Culture Michael Chan. Presentation by the Ontario Government and unveiling of Varley Art Gallery expansion project . Carlton and Main Street, Unionville.

June 7 – Philippines Flag Raising – 11 a.m. Markham Civic Centre

June 8 – 10 – Seniors Art Showcase – Markham Civic Centre, Great Hall, daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More than 100 works created by local artists from Markham’s seniors clubs: Thornhill Seniors Club, Milliken on the Move, Older Adults in Action (Markham Seniors Centre). The talent is amazing.

June 9 – Free Learn to Conserve Workshop – Thornhill Library, 7755 Bayview Ave., Thornhill – 7 to 9 p.m. Presented by Markham Energy Conservation Office (MECO) in partnership with PowerStream. Learn how to save money and help our environment. Microwave cooking demonstration. Registration 905-477-5530.

June 10 – Free Learn to Conserve Workshop – Angus Glen Library, 3990 Major Mackenzie Dr. East, Markham – 7 to 9 p.m. Presented by Markham Energy Conservation Office (MECO) in partnership with PowerStream. June 13-14 – New this year – Markham Community Days – Markham Museum 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A weekend of Family Fun. Free Admission – Try Bocce with the Markham Centennial Bocce Club and Soccer with the Markham Soccer Club. Experience Brush Painting with the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto. Learn about the Markham Arts Council and Rouge Park. June 16 – Free Learn to Conserve Workshop – Unionville Library, 15 Library Lane - 7 to 9 p.m. Presented by Markham Energy Conservation Office (MECO) in partnership with PowerStream. Learn how to save money and help our environment. Microwave cooking demonstration. Registration 905-477-5530.

June 19-20 – Markham Village Music Festival – Markham Road, north of Highway 7, 6:30 to 10 p.m. June 19; 10:30 to 5 p.m. June 20 – Music from rock and roll to classical, from country to hip hop, along with amateur and professional entertainers from Markham, York Region and the GTA. See dancers, jugglers, clowns and much more.

June 20 – Opening, Unionville South Park, 11 a.m. – Caboto Trail and Isabella St. – Join Mayor Frank Scarpitti and Members of Markham Council to celebrate Markham’s newest community park. entertainment and fun for the family.

June 23 – Free Learn to Conserve Workshop – Milliken Mills Library, 7600 Kennedy Road - 7 to 9 p.m. Presented by Markham Energy Conservation Office (MECO) in partnership with PowerStream. Learn how to save money and help our environment. Microwave cooking demonstration. Registration 905-477-5530.

June 23 – Designing Beautiful Gardens with Native Plants – Free workshop – Markham Village Library 6031 Highway 7 East – 7 to 9 p.m. Come and learn about environmentally friendly gardening. To register call 905-477-5530

June 27 – 28 Taste of Asia Festival - Kennedy Road and Steeles Ave. and Market Village Shopping Centre Day-long fun for the whole family at Canada's largest Asian Festival.

July 1 – Canada Day Celebrations – Milne Park – McCowan Road, just south of Highway 7. Celebrate Canada’s 142nd Birthday with a parade, entertainment, fun, food and family. The special day ends with fireworks at dusk (about 9:30 p.m.)
