Markham's Award-Winning Heritage Treasures Open to Residents

MARKHAM, ON, ~ August 25, 2009 ~ Doors Open Markham, an annual showcase of the community’s historical and architectural treasures, takes place this Saturday, August 29, at locations throughout Markham.

The event gives residents and visitors the unique opportunity to tour some of markham’s most interesting cultural heritage sites, including heritage homes, private gardens and more. Some of the buildings open for behind-the-scenes tours include:
• St. Andrew’s United Church, built in 1862 and whose congregation is celebrating 175 years
• Markham Village Train Station
• Unionville Train Station
• Eckhardt-McKay House, which was home to Group of Seven artist Fred Varley
• Heritage Estates, on 16th Avenue just west of Highway 48
• Markham’s three cultural sites – the Markham Museum, the Varley Art Gallery and the Markham Theatre.
 
Doors Open Markham is a free event sponsored by the Town of Markham, and made possible with the support of site owners, volunteers and the Markham and Unionville Business Improvement Associations. It will take place rain or shine on August 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For a list of locations, visit www.doorsopenmarkham.ca
