Jazz Legend Dave Brubeck takes centre stage at Markham Theatre

This concert is part of the 25th Anniversary celebrations of Markham Theatre and the only Canadian performance for this period by this Jazz icon, his very first visit at the intimate venue.

Brubeck, is one of the most influential jazz musicians and composers of our time, celebrates this year the 50th Anniversary of his ground breaking album Time Out, which includes the hit “Take 5.” Brubeck’s Quartet sound defined what became known as West Coast Cool and led Jazz into the jet-set sixties. Designated a “Living Legend” by the Library of Congress, Dave continues at age 88 to be one of the most active and popular musicians in the world today. Brubeck will be recognized by President Obama on December 6th at the 2009 Kennedy Centre Honors Gala which will be videotaped for a December 29 broadcast on CBS.

For this sole Canadian performance this fall, Dave Brubeck will be joined by his regular band members, Bobby Militello, alto saxophone and flute, Randy Jones, drums and Michael Moore, bass. His most recent record release 50 Years of Dave Brubeck: Live at Monterey Jazz Festival 1958-2007 has received rave reviews, one critic calling it “almost a history of jazz itself”.

According to Theatre Manager Eric Lariviere, “The performance of Mr. Brubeck in Markham is a great gift to the community and a unique opportunity for theatre patrons to experience this legendary jazz icon centre stage. This concert presented during the 25th Anniversary at Markham Theatre showcases a commitment to continue to provide cultural leadership in the York Region.”
