WARD 3 RESIDENTS REMINDED TO VOTE IN UPCOMING BY-ELECTION Markham makes process quicker, more accessible, and environmentally friendly
Eligible voters in Markham’s Ward 3 are being reminded to vote in the upcoming local councillor by-election.
Voting Day is set for Monday, November 23, 2009 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at various locations. Advance voting will be held on Saturday, November 14 and Sunday, November 15 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Varley Art Gallery, 216 Main Street Unionville. Residents are asked to consider walking or cycling to their voting place, to reduce parking congestion and help the environment.
Voter Notification Cards were mailed to all individuals on the Voters’ List last week. The card instructs voters where and when to vote, and explains what types of identification voters are required to show at the polling station. Eligible voters who did not receive a voter notification card can still add themselves to the Voters’ List online at www.markham.ca, by phone 905-477-7000 ext. 8683 (VOTE) or in person at the Clerk’s Department at the Markham Civic Centre.
For the first time, Markham will be using an electronic Voter's List, which will speed up the voting process and significantly reduce the amount of paper traditionally used. An AutoMARK ballot marking unit will also be available during early voting (November 14 and 15) to assist voters with vision and physical mobility disabilities to cast their votes independently.
Results of the by-election, including results from early voting, will be available online shortly after the close of polls (8:00 p.m.) on November 23, 2009. Results are unofficial until certified by the Town Clerk. Residents can also watch the results at the Markham Civic Centre or the Varley Art Gallery.
Residents can visit www.markham.ca for more information on the Ward 3 by-election, including details on how to vote, examples of valid ID and the list of registered candidates.
